An internet diary
or at least paying CLOSE attention to my children's education

A couple of peopel point out this kind of thing is slightly more likely to happen in private schools due to the direct connect between keeping the parents happy and the money coming in. There's no good answer, really.

I read the two incidents, and have to comment here....the first teacher did not answer the student's question....the meaning of a line of Shakespeare is not given by quoting, incorrectly, a verse from the Bible. If the teacher felt that verse was pertinent, then use it's MEANING to explain the Shakespearean quote. As for the second teacher, the "facts" presented to the class about why Hitler came to power were historically inaccurate. Sounds to me like two non-tenured teachers who weren't doing a proper job lost their positions.

As a former teacher, and as a parent of three children, I would hope that any and all teachers who are not doing their jobs properly will be terminated in order to make room for those who will.

""Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of The Judgement; but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be in danger of The Judgement; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Ra ca, (worthless) shall be in danger of the Council, but whosoever shall say Thou Fool!, shall be in danger of hell fire."

I think it is a poor interpretation to say that Jesus said that people who call other people fools were going to hell. It seems pretty obvious that Jesus is saying that discounting other human beings for whatever reason is a symptom of what sends people to hell. Our acts don't send us to hell, rather our intent, the filth inside us that provokes those acts sends us to hell. The words that seem to be missed are "shall be in danger of hell fire"

If you are the kind of person that won't hear reason and discounts the value of others based upon their beliefs and ideas, then perhaps you have a deeper problem that won't be something to be proud of when you face your maker. People seem to want zero-tolerace judgement on acts, but it is your spiritual health that determines your acts.

My point (badly presented, it's true) was that incidents like these undermine my willingness to leave my childs' education in the hands of a system thet reacts to the most annoyed parent by squelching the teacher.

I would agree....but in the cases cited, it would appear that the teachers were, indeed, at fault. As a teacher myself, I would have found no fault in either of them losing their jobs.
