My wife pointed me at this article in the Consumerist which touched on the policies regarding unaccompanied minors for various airlines. Several of the commentators were shocked that Southwest officially did not escort children of 12+ years; and in general that children of 10-13 or so were not treated as defenseless to the world. By the time I was 13 (I say that because it was 20 years ago, and my memory is hazy for which summers some of this happened in) I had done or was allowed to ...

Sebastian offers us this story of a home defense incident involving a sword. (It turns out well for the sword wielder). Picture yourself in this position, though; especially if you are not a large and fit man. A large man, dripping blood, has just entered your bedroom and is demanding that you keep quiet and don't let the police know he's there. He is evidently not in his right mind. What are your options? What can you do, what will you do? Locking the doors didn't help this couple -...

(Title from a song by Tim McGraw) I was at work when someone said down the row of desks "Did you hear about a plane hitting the World Trade Center?" I assumed that it was a General Aviation (light) aircraft, and said something to the effect that the towers were built to withstand that, having learned from the incident with the Empire State building and a B-25 bomber... Sadly, I was proven wrong. But that's not what was imprinted on my brain that day; rather, a little while later, I was ...

Seen in a comment thread: "If you meet a lawyer who professes to know all the laws, find a new lawyer. Preferably one who isn't a liar."

What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Midland "You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio. The Northeast The Inland North P...

What type of Fae are you?

I went into the kitchen just a short time ago and saw that the clock on the stove was flashing 2:58... a sure indication that we had lost power about 3 hrs ago. Now I have been awake for almost an hour and a half; and this was the first time I realized it... There's damn few things in this house that either don't have onboard power, or aren't UPS'd. (One of these, admittedly, is the cable modem and one of the network switches - so if I had had a big download going I would have realized this. ...

Via Argghhh! The Home Of Two Of Jonah's Military Guys.. comes this test.   You Passed 8th Grade Math Congratulations, you got 10/10 correct! Could You Pass 8th Grade Math?   I'll admit that I used some l33t SAT skilz on a couple of questions (IE, I couldn't definitively come up with the right answer - so if it hadn't been multiple choice I would hav e had difficulties).

You scored as Millennium Falcon (Star Wars) . The world around you is at war. Fortunately you know how to handle that with the greatest of ease. You are one of the best at what you do and no one needs to tell you that. Now if only the droids could be quiet for five seconds. Millennium Falcon (Star Wars) 94% Nebuchadnezzar (The Matrix) 88% Deep Space Nine (Star Trek) 81% Galactica (Battlestar: Galactica) ...

Whenever someone drags Bush 43 into a conversation about non-political topics, polite conversation is over.

Glenn Reynolds wrote an article for TechCentralStation that is about the differences between large and small organizations in the current environment, and what that might mean in the future. One of the statements he made struck me: " Targeting an industry made up of many small companies is likely to be much harder." We already know this to be true - see the firearms industry. In particular, see what happened to Smith & Wesson when they attempted to cut a deal with the...

I guess I haven't been inspired to blog recently. This didn't start out as a life-blog, rather, as a political safety valve. But with Bush's victory, I'm not getting nearly as inspired to post; I can rant in comments on other people's blogs (and I don't even do that much any more). Also, I haven't had as much time. When I started this blog, I was unemployed, and was to remain so for several more months. It turned out to be providential that I was unemployed for that period of time. It mean...
