this interesting article on how the
memetic fallout of the Cold War is weakening us against the new enemy.
I knew some (but not all) of the historical background; and I'm sure that the
author is going to get all kinds of flamage for saying "all of Joseph McCarthy’s
rants about “Communists in the State Department” were essentially true."
Because, you know, it's just not done to admit that Joseph McCarthy was
anything but a small-minded persecutor (which he certainly was, but it is
true that he was persecuting people who were the enemy. He just didn't know when
to stop, and there ought to be a different between persecuting and prosecuting
other than one vowel).
Anyway read the whole thing, and stop and think about how much American
society has changed in outlook since Stalin's memetic attacks...
